Abstract

With increasing herbicide resistant weed populations in Kentucky winter wheat, producers are looking for new weed control options for Italian ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. ssp. multiflorum Lam.). A field study was conducted to better understand Italian ryegrass seed dispersal and the effectiveness of the Redekop seed control unit at winter wheat harvest in Kentucky. During harvest, the number of Italian ryegrass seeds shattering at the combine header, in the chaff, and contained in the grain tank was not significantly different. When the grain and chaff samples were combined, significantly more Italian ryegrass seed entered the combine. The integrated impact mill did not decrease intact Italian ryegrass seed contained in the fine chaff. Significantly more Italian ryegrass seed was flowing through the Redekop seed control unit than straw chopper at winter wheat harvest. The Italian ryegrass seed being contributed to the seedbank was not decreased using the Redekop seed control unit. Another form of HWSC known as chaff lining was evaluated. The soybean and chaff line orientation had no effect on the Italian ryegrass emergence or viability apart from the chaff line orientation affecting the Italian ryegrass emergence in 2022. Although, concentrating the Italian ryegrass to one area could be beneficial.
