Description
To conserve natural resources on rangelands requires an integrated systems approach to management. This approach typifies strategic plans or initiatives of natural resource agencies involved with the management of cold temperate rangelands. Expounding on this theme, this paper (Part I) proposes one of two strategic actions: increase and optimise the use of shrub plant resources on rangelands. (The second strategy is discussed in the subsequent paper, Part II.) Shrubs contain many attributes not found in grasses or other herbaceous species that favourably affect hydrologic, soil conservation, plant growth, and other fundamental processes that characterise natural resource interactions.
