Description
Agricultural development in Hokkaido began in the late 1860s' and has been remarkably advancing under intensive official support. Most of the grassland development has taken place over the last two decades while upland and rice fields were primarily developed by World War II. Today, approximately a century later, grassland, the majority of which is distributed in the eastern and northern regions, makes up the largest area of farmland and comprises 79% of the national total. Grassland is primarily used for cattle production. The level of grassland-based farming has rapidly risen to that of the EC nations. Further development of the grassland is expected.
