Description
African Americans were not wanted as employees in the Kentucky Cigar Industry. By 1920, neighboring state, Indiana, had taken full advantage of the situation and hired 42% of its African American cigar and tobacco employees from Kentucky. For a brief period, 1920-1930, African American women were the majority of the employees from Kentucky working in the Indiana cigar factories.
