Description
Alexander Cross was born in Trenton, KY. Emulating what other religious denominations had done with colored missionaries / former slaves, the Disciples of Christ selected Alexander Cross as their first missionary to be sent to Africa. He died from fever one month after arriving in Liberia, Africa. The American Colonization Society had chosen land in Liberia for the return site for free African Americans to establish a colony that would be loyal to the United States.
