Description
Ghats in Varanasi (Benares) are riverfront steps leading to the banks of the River Ganges. Varanasi has 87 ghats mostly used for bathing and punja (the act of showing reverence to a god, a spirit, or another aspect of the divine through invocations, prayers, songs, and rituals) ceremony while a few are used for cremation sites. Most of the Ghats in Varanasi are privately owned.
