Having experienced two world wars, Monnet believed that a united Europe was essential for peace within the region. He was also responsible for preparing the Schuman Declaration, which would be the foundation for the European Union and its predecessors. Through his many roles in EU history, he was important for convincing European leaders to work towards a common interest.
