Abstract Survey techniques can be used to supplement and enhance the effectiveness of more conventional monitoring practices (i.e., visual inspections and instrumentation) for closed CCR storage facilities. The performance of annual surveys of CCR facilities following closure can be used to monitor the integrity and effectiveness of the final cover system and satisfy relevant regulatory requirements regarding post-closure care. Surface comparison analyses between current and baseline surveys completed after closure of the facility can provide a high-level screening assessment to identify areas of possible settlement and/or heave within the final cover system. Surface comparison analyses consist of evaluating vertical differences between survey surfaces created in AutoCAD Civil 3D or equivalent software. Areas indicating changes in apparent elevation can then be investigated more thoroughly to determine if repairs and/or modifications are required to properly maintain the facility. These analyses can be used independent of, or in conjunction with, annual CCR facility inspections to facilitate more effective inspections and enable targeted responses to potential changes in final cover systems. This presentation will focus on two readily available survey techniques (photogrammetry and LiDAR) and highlight benefits and limitations of incorporating these into long-term monitoring plans for closed CCR storage facilities.
