Description

Coal Ash Landfill Leachate Systems – Design and Treatment Authors Mrs. Christine Harris - United States - Groundwater Treatment and Technology, LLC (GWTT) Mr. Rob Orlando - United States - Groundwater Treatment and Technology, LLC (GWTT) Abstract Leachate from a coal ash landfill is a highly variable solution which could contain a myriad of constituents as well as varying pH values. The proposed Effluent Limits Guideline limit the discharge of coal ash leachate. This presentation will provide an overview of the design and treatment methods that can be employed to manage this leachate. The first part of the presentation will cover the information necessary to characterize the chemical composition of the leachate (or potential leachate) and identifying the primary pollutants. How this information will be used in the design of an effective treatment system will also be discussed. The presentation will then discuss the treatment approach for different constituents. Various treatment methods will be covered as well as the benefits and limits of each method. The presentation will address practical aspects such as site layout, equipment selection and monitoring strategies. A review of considerations for operations and maintenance will be discussed. Finally, example treatment systems based on different constituent scenarios and flow rates will be reviewed. Attendees will leave with an understanding of coal ash landfill leachate design and treatment options and knowledge on potential system layouts as well as considerations for operation and maintenance.
