Beneficial Reuse of Fly Ash Harvested from Historic Onsite Sources Authors Mr. Todd Stong - United States - WSP USA Mr. Craig Schuettpelz - United States - WSP USA Mr. Ryan Frank - United States - Rainbow Energy Center Mr. Shane Stockdill - United States - Rainbow Energy Center Abstract At many power generation sites, fly ash and other coal combustion residuals (CCRs) have been deposited in previously mined areas, potential “CCR management units” (CCRMUs), or CCR landfills and surface impoundments. The physical properties of these materials may allow them to be beneficially used in applications that meet both regulatory requirements and construction requirements for the beneficial use. Depending on the physical properties of these materials, they may be particularly useful in structural applications or where drainage is critical. This presentation will focus on reclaiming historically deposited fly ash from previously mined areas, using this material as a structural component in a CCR surface impoundment. Historically deposited and cemented fly ash was reclaimed from disposal areas, crushed, and moisture-conditioned prior to being placed in a partly cemented state in permitted CCR units. Laboratory testing was performed to evaluate the strength and erodibility of the material for use in the perimeter of a CCR surface impoundment as an erosion protection layer and heavy haul road. The beneficial reuse of these previously deposited CCRs allows for newly produced fly ash to be sold offsite for beneficial uses while allowing the CCR surface impoundment to be constructed with the required structural components.
