Description

WM offers a unique perspective after building and operating several Coal Combustion Residual (CCR) landfills for clients as well as operating CCR monofills at several WM landfills. One feature that has been consistently incorporated into landfill design for our clients is chimney drains. While intended to collect water from exposed CCR surfaces and channel it to the leachate management system, their use requires precise installation and CCR placement to ensure functionality. In working with chimney drains during the construction and closure phases, WM has identified best practices in managing the effectiveness of chimney drains. In sharing our experience for managing chimney drains during construction, WM will also take a brief look at other methods for managing water during CCR landfill construction.
