ADVANCED SYNTHETIC AND CONCRETE REVETMENT SYSTEM FOR CCR CLOSURE APPLICATIONS Authors Mr. Bradford Cooley - United States - WatershedGeo Mr. Randy Thompson - United States - Watershed Geo Abstract The Advanced Synthetic and Concrete Revetment System (ASCR) stands as a groundbreaking geosynthetic solution, designed to safeguard earthen structures from significant erosive hydraulic forces. It is a flexible, fiber-reinforced concrete revetment consisting of a high-friction geomembrane overlain by engineered synthetic turf which is infilled with a high strength concrete. Typical ASCR applications in Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Closure projects, are dam embankments, shorelines, spillways, steep downchutes, and stormwater perimeter channels. Evaluating the ASCR (HydroTurf®) for erosion protection involved extensive full-scale hydraulic steady state flume and wave overtopping testing at Colorado State University's Engineering Research Center (CSU). Rigorous assessments included intact system hydraulic performance, resilience to heavy debris impact, intentional damage scenarios, and hydraulic jump evaluations. The HydroTurf® ASCR maintained subgrade soils integrity under severe hydraulic forces for all the different test conditions, a feat unparalleled in other revetment technologies. This presentation explains the HydroTurf® ASCR's components, outlines full-scale testing procedures, and presents performance results, culminating in a comparative analysis with alternative revetment systems. Supported by multiple case histories with specific location storm data, the paper underscores ASCR's effectiveness in aiding CCR owners' compliance with stringent environmental regulations at federal, state, and local levels.
