Implementing automation and SMART pumping systems in CCR projects for improved water collection, treatment, and discharge Authors Mr. Dave Donahue - United States - Xylem Mr. Faizan Chowdhury - United States - Xylem Abstract Smart Technology, Sustainability, Discharge Regulations Safe, sustainable management of spent coal combustion products remains a critical priority for the power generation and coal ash industries. Companies must implement reliable, efficient recycling and remediation programs that minimize environmental impact and operational costs, while protecting people and equipment. Today’s pumps conduct real-time monitoring of site conditions providing information to the user, such as rainfall amounts, well levels, flow rates, pump status, etc. We will show how owners and contractors who apply automation technologies and integrate smart pumps and devices into their water management strategy on CCR projects, can achieve several important benefits, including: • Reduced operational costs • Improved operational efficiencies • Decreased manpower needs • Proper data collection and storage to drive future improvements • Compliance with EPA requirements • Conduct preventative maintenance to avoid equipment failure • Safer access to pumping equipment Recent advances in powering these smart devices with solar and/or batteries provide additional environmental and cost benefit.
