Axel Robert Ernberg (August 1, 1900 - August 10, 1978) was born in Brooklyn, New York to Hjalmar Ernberg and Anna Sjödin. His parents were Swedish immigrants and his mother was the superintendent of Fireside Industries at Berea College. Ernberg practiced law in Richmond after graduation. He served as a captain in the Army Judge Advocate General Corps during World War II. Ernberg then worked as adjudicator for the Veteran's Administration in Cincinnati, Ohio for several years. In 1958, Ernberg returned to Berea and reentered private practice. He married Dorothy Weinbrecht.
