William Covington Benton (March 2, 1897 - July 28, 1954) was born in Winchester, Kentucky to James Milton Benton and Elizabeth Barrett Smith. His father was a lawyer in Winchester. Benton moved to Denver, Colorado after graduating from the University of Kentucky. He practiced law with his father-in-law, Christopher Field Clay, in the firm of Clay & Benton. Benton married Katherine Clay in 1924.
