Description
Since independence, Kenya has found herself at the crossroads caused by economic recession, criminality, corruption and ineptitude leadership that has led to persistent household extreme poverty. It is time now to search for solutions to address the challenges facing sustainable livelihood development in Kenya. This study, therefore examines the challenges of grasslands related policies and their implementation in Kenya and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A review study of the literature on grasslands and rangelands related policies and laws, SDGs frameworks, government and academic literature was carried out. The study results show that; Kenya has faced challenges of grasslands policies implementation such as unrealistic goal setting, lack of strong laws to enforce the policies, political patronage, not considering the policy environment and neglect of the target beneficiaries. The study recommends that; Kenya should set policy goals that are implementable and enact appropriate laws to enforce the policies. The country should review the SDGs to domesticate the goals with proper environmental considerations. Kenya should do more to check corruption. Policies designed for implementation by the central government should include county governments’ contents. There should be participation of the target beneficiaries (THE LOCAL PEOPLE); in any policy designed to avoid sabotage. With these, SDGs will make a positive significant impact in Kenya.
