Description
A cellulase cDNA, ce/E, was isolated from a cellulose-induced cDNA library of the rumen fungus Neocallimastix patriciarum by screening for hydrolysis of carboxymethyl cellulose. In addition to its ability to hydrolyse carboxymethyl cellulose, ce/E enzyme was also able to degrade microcrystalline cellulose, methylumbelliferyl cellobioside, p-nitrophenyl cellobioside, lichenan and xylan. These data suggest that ce/E encodes a multi-functional cellulase.
