Face flies (Musca autumnalis De Geer) and slable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans L.) were raised in the laboralory and released into 12 enclosures, each with I grazing cow (Bos taurus L.). Releases of 0, 400 and 800 face flies gave 3, 53 and 64 lighted flies/cow, respectively, with 30/head al the 400 and 800 levels, and eliciled head (2, 60 and 39/h), ears (8, 1337 and 859/h), tails (24, 191 and 606/h) movements and skin twitches (1 side) (15, 210 and 248/h) but did not induce leg movements or affect number of feeding stations visited (188/h), Face flies increased herbage intake rates from 0,37 to 0.59 kg/100 kg/h and intake per bite from 0.74 to 1.36 g, Releases of 2500 stable flies/ cow resulted in mean populations of 100 lighted flies/cow with 65/ front legs, 26/hind legs and the remainder on the trunk. Stable flies inducecl movements of the front (364/h) and hind legs (84/h), head (225/h) and ears (494/h), tail (2354/h) and skin twitching ( I 173/h). Cows visited 237 feeding station/h. Herbage intake rates were not affected by stable flies and averaged 0,35 kg/100 kg/h.
