Description
in parts of Japan, snow endurance is the most critical factor for winter crop production. To overcome the problem, a breeding , programme of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) was started In 1962 and led to the release of the tetraploid variety Miyukiaoba, which has an extremely high level of snow endurance. It is shown· that snow, endurance has resulted from the resistance to snow mold; disease, especially Pythium paddicum and Typhula incarnata. Accumulation of fructan (fructose polymer) also plays an important role in survival under snow. This study demonstrates the relationship of the 2 aspects to snow endurance.
