Description
Examining 10 species of the subgenus Micromelilotus, the interspecific cross compatibility is recognized among 5 species, M.infesta, M.macrocarpa, M. messane.nsis, M.segetalis, and M. sulcata. Chromosome behaviors at meiosis of the F1 hybrids reared to maturity are investigated. It is revealed that structural differentiation of chromosomes due to a reciprocal translocation and a complex of paracentric inversions play a significant role in speciation. These basic informations are also useful for sweetclover breeding program using interspecific hybridizations.
