Description
This study evaluated corn silages stored in concrete stave and oxygen-limiting silos during 1978-1980. Factors considered included the effect of environmental conditions in each silo on silage stability and feeding value. Milk production was evaluated using Holstein cows, intake studies used Holstein heifers or steers. Weekly measurements of intake, milk production, silage temperature, pH, and yeast and mold content were made for each silage. Aerobic stability was determined monthly. Silo type had no effect on intake or milk production. Silage temperatures from the oxygen-limiting silo were higher, and the silage was less stable than that from concrete stave silos. No advantages of the oxygen-limiting structure over conventional concrete stave silos were observed for the parameters studied.
