Abstract
Flame Azaleas exists as a semi-autobiographical collection of poems centering a transgender speaker reflecting on their Appalachian heritage, their relationship with their God, their past sexual trauma, and their relationship with their blooming body as they grow from adolescence into adulthood. The poems are at times addressed to the speaker’s mother, at times to God, and at times to their Love. These poems examine themes of womanhood, gender expression, personal memory, scarcity, generational trauma, intimate love, intimate violence, religious iconography, and non-linear healing.
