Abstract
“Panning for Gold” recounts the childhood of a Chinese girl, Juan, who grows up in a gold-mining town in northern China. The rest of the stories in this collection explore what it feels like to be an immigrant living in the United States, what it feels like to be a woman struggling for survival, and the relationship between men and women, whether it is a parasitic, symbiotic, or predation relationship.
