Abstract

Background: Growing evidence shows that front line nurse leaders take on their role with minimal education and training. Healthcare facilities are pressed for resources and time to allow for proper development of these leaders.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to provide novice nurse leaders with a condensed management development program utilizing key American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL) nurse manager competencies. This abbreviated program was developed focusing on three key competencies of finance, innovation, and human resources. The impact of the program was measured by comparing self-assessment prior to any of the education and after the entire program was completed.

Methods: This project utilized a quasi-experimental approach one-group time study to assess the impact of a condensed management development program on nurse leaders. The instrument used in this project was created using the AONL nurse leader human resource, finance and innovation competencies. Information was also collected related to participant demographics including education level, years in nursing, and years in nursing management.

Results: There was statistically significant improvement noted from the pre-intervention survey to the post-intervention survey in all three competencies of finance, innovation, and human resources.

Conclusion: These results give credence to the idea that abbreviated courses can have a positive impact on nurse leaders. And while it would be preferred to have extended education sessions and programs for nurse leaders, there is merit in providing abbreviated programs.
