Description
Born in Starkville, MS, Harry N. Sykes was the first African American elected to the Lexington City Council in 1963. Among his many accomplishments was the founding of the Lexington/Fayette County Urban League in 1968. Sykes served as Lexington mayor pro-tem, 1967-1969. He ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Lexington in 1971.
