Description
In 1824, a group of 200 escaped slaves agreed to leave Pennsylvania to form a colony on Samana Bay in the Haitian Republic. The group members were from Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and South Carolina. The Haitian government was overthrown in 1843 and the Dominican Republic became an independent nation. Samana Bay was located in the Dominican Republic.
