Description
Diomed, foaled in England in 1777, won the inaugural running of the Epsom Derby in 1780. During his early racing years, he was considered to be the most promising colt in Britain since Eclipse.
After years of diminishing stud fees in England, Diomed was purchased by Colonel John Hoomes of Virginia in 1798.
He spent the rest of his years between American stud farms until his death at the age of 31.
His offspring included saddlehorses for Thomas Jefferson, and the great American racers Haynie’s Maria, Ball’s Florizel, Duroc, and Sir Archy.
