Description
Camel was a British Thoroughbred bred by the 3rd Earl of Egremont, George Wyndham.
He was sired by Whalebone who claimed victories at both the Epsom Derby and Newmarket Stakes in 1810. Camel won five of his seven races, but his career was troubled by leg problems.
He was retired to stud in 1828, and his many successful offspring include Touchstone and Launcelot. Camel was the leading British sire in 1838.
In a Sporting Magazine article from November of 1827, Camel was referred to as “the speediest of the speedy.”
