¡Viva México!
During the 2013-2014 academic year, Passport to the World: ¡Viva México! will bring the fascinating peoples, politics, cultures, and arts of Mexico to life on the UK campus. Beginning with the pre-Columbian civilizations through the first successful social revolution of the twentieth century to current issues such as immigration and the drug wars, we plan to explore a great variety of current topics to highlight the huge diversity that some have called “Many Mexicos.” Mexico shares a two-thousand mile border with the United States, has a population of 112 million people, and is United States' second most important trading partner, yet most Americans know little of their southern neighbor. By developing themes that cut across campus and offering an attractive variety of events drawing on the richness of Mexico, we hope to emphasize, on a human scale, the common ground our nations share. At the same time, we will investigate, celebrate, and foster respect for our differences.
