Description

Tribo-electrostatic separation has been used for the commercial beneficiation of coal combustion fly ash to produce a low carbon product for use as a cement replacement in concrete for over twenty-five years. With 24 separators in 18 coal-fired power plants and cement plants across the world, ST Equipment & Technology LLC’s (STET) patented electrostatic separator has been used to produce over 25 million tons of low carbon product that has been recycled for use in concrete or cement production. STET has developed and commercialized a new process for beneficiation of reclaimed fly ash from landfills and ponds that utilizes fly ash drying and deagglomeration technology together with carbon separation technology using their tribo-electrostatic separator. This fly ash beneficiation process offers both electric utility and cementitious materials customers an environmentally friendly, low-carbon emission, fly ash recycling technology which enables cost effective landfill and pond reclamation. Talen Energy is a leading independent power producer with a diverse generation portfolio of approximately 10.3 GW, serving commercial, industrial, and residential customers across the U.S. Talen is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability, including the responsible recycling of coal combustion products to reduce landfill impacts and support beneficial reuse in construction materials. STET and Talen Energy are pleased to announce the construction of a 600,000 ton per year coal ash drying and sizing facility to be constructed at the Talen Energy Brunner Island power station near York PA. The authors will present key considerations for evaluating and implementing a commercial scale harvesting project, both from the utility and coal ash processor/marketer prospective.
