Description
Standards such as product specifications, test methods, practices and guides play a crucial role in supporting both commerce and science. Standardization helps build consistency and reliability whether it pertains to the performance of an ingredient in a product or in the measurement of a material characteristic. Coal combustion products, such as coal ash and synthetic gypsum, exhibit unique characteristics and many standard have been developed to characterize these materials and support their beneficial use. ASTM is a voluntary, consensus-based organization, and publishes many standards related to coal combustion products. Currently, there are seven ASTM standards related to chemical analysis of coal ash (C311, D3174, D4326, D3682, D6349, D7348, D7762); eleven related to ash characterization and beneficial use (C593, C618, C1697, C1827, C1897, E2201, E2060, E2243, E2277, E2278, and E5759), and two related to harvesting of coal combustion products (E3183, E3355). ASTM Committee E50.03 on Beneficial Use is developing new standards that aim to progress the understanding and beneficial use of coal combustion products. The ASTM standardization process is driven by task groups comprised of interested stakeholders with industrial, governmental, academic and other backgrounds. Involvement of stakeholders with experience in the characterization or beneficial use of coal combustion products is needed to support the development of new standards as well as maintain the usefulness of existing standards. The process of ASTM standard development from task group idea to approved publication is reviewed and opportunities for new standards are discussed.
