Description

Exploring Non-invasive High-Resolution Geophysical Site Characterization Methods for Delineation of Coal Ash Authors Mr. Colin Plank - United States - Burns &McDonnell Dr. Mike Shultz - United States - Burns & McDonnell Dr. James Feild - United States - Burns & McDonnell Abstract “Legacy Rule” revisions to Combustible Coal Residuals (CCR) regulations for inactive electric utility surface impoundments and CCR management units combined with aggressive compliance timeframes make efficient site delineation and characterization critical for program managers to achieve and sustain compliance. Advances in high-resolution geophysical approaches allow for non-invasive delineation in three-dimensions which can significantly reduce investigation costs and improve certainty of outcomes for ash delineation projects. Tools and techniques, their limitations, resolution, relative cost, and critical site factors or requirements that would impact their potential applicability are presented in a screening matrix that can be used to help plan investigation. Examples of applied and potentially applicable surficial mapping technologies discussed include electrical resistivity, seismic, ground penetrating radar, drone-based airborne electromagnetic, and nuclear magnetic resonance. Down hole technologies that can be deployed to collect high-resolution vertical profiles in existing cased-hole wells include natural gamma-ray logging, magnetic resonance imaging, and induction logging. Direct push technologies such as Electrical Conductivity- Hydraulic Profiling Tool (EC-HPT) and cone-penetrometer which yield high value continuous data and are minimally invasive are also included in the evaluation.
