Performance of Engineered Turf Cover System Under Extreme Weather Conditions Authors Mr. Thomas Orzech - United States - Watershed Geo Dr. Bryan Scholl - United States - Watershed Geo Mr. Bradford Cooley - United States - Watershed Geo Dr. Ming Zhu - United States - Watershed Geo Abstract The engineered turf final closure system (ClosureTurf®) is installed or awaiting installation on over 4,000 acres of waste containment facilities including coal combustion residual (CCR) units and industrial and municipal solid waste landfills. A significant benefit of the engineered turf cover system over traditional soil covers is performance and resiliency under extreme weather conditions. The engineered turf cover system performs well during high rainfall intensities and/or high winds by protecting the containment facility from erosion or damage to the closure system and underlying subgrade/waste. This leads to dramatic improvement in stormwater runoff quality and reduction in post-closure maintenance costs. An overview of the engineered turf cover system is presented and a comparison with traditional soil covers including real-world performance evaluations of the installed engineered turf cover system on CCR, Industrial and municipal solid waste facilities. Installations were subjected to over twenty-five (25) hurricanes and named tropical storms or typhoons. Based on site-located and airport weather stations, the engineered turf cover system has experienced rainfall intensities exceeding 7 in/hr and wind speeds over 80 mph while maintaining integrity. The paper will be beneficial to site owners and engineers seeking a safe, cost-effective, resilient final closure solution of CCR landfills and impoundments.
