The Overall Process of Beneficially Using Bottom Ash as Landfill Protective Cover, an Engineer’s Perspective Authors Mr. Ryan Doyle - United States - AECOM Abstract Using bottom ash as protective cover along the base of a landfill is one way to beneficially use coal combustion residuals (CCR). The bottom ash serves as a filter to prevent finer particles (e.g. fly ash) from clogging the geocomposite liner which transports leachate to the sump of the landfill cell. Understanding the gradation of the bottom ash and the material properties of the geocomposite are imperative to finding the right combination for an effective liner system. This presentation will provide an engineer’s perspective of the overall process of beneficially using bottom ash as landfill protective cover, from specifying the right combination of bottom ash and geocomposite, to excavation of the bottom ash for placement within the landfill cell. It will cover the selection of geocomposite and protective cover based on hydraulic conductivity ratio (HCR) testing; discuss the importance of understanding the site history of what, where, and how bottom ash was deposited; provide an overview of means and methods for bottom ash investigation activities; and explain how target areas for excavation were identified based on laboratory testing and subsurface characterization.
