An Innovative and Economical Approach To Ash Dewatering Authors Mr. Morgan French - United States - UCC Environmental Abstract This paper presents an innovative and cost-effective approach for fly ash dewatering that is specifically designed to address a major challenge in coal ash pond closure projects. Fly ash dewatering is particularly difficult because of its fine particle size, typically less than 40 microns, and its hydrophilic nature, which makes it difficult to separate from water. The new technique employs a combination of chemical treatment and mechanical dewatering to achieve a significant reduction of fly ash moisture content. The chemical treatment employs coagulation and flocculation processes to facilitate the solids separation. The dewatering process then uses mechanical force and pressure to remove additional moisture from the ash. The results showed a significant reduction of fly ash moisture content, with moisture content ranging from 30% to less than 20%. This new dewatering technique promises substantial cost savings for either disposal or beneficiation, making it an economically sustainable solution for the coal-fired power industry to manage coal ash in an environmentally friendly manner.
