Successful Beneficiation Strategies for Harvested Coal Ash Residuals (CCR) Authors Mr. Bill Fedorka, P.E. - United States - The SEFA Group, LLC Abstract The positive economic, environmental and technical benefits of utilizing coal ash as a replacement for cement in concrete has an extensive and successful history. However, the availability of current production coal ash for use as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in concrete has decreased dramatically. Harvested CCR from disposal and storage sites has proven to be a valuable resource. The SEFA Group has been beneficiating harvested coal ash on a commercial scale since 2015, and to date has processed over 5 million tons of recovered CCR. In addition to creating a high-quality SCM for the concrete products industry, beneficiating harvested CCR provides a manufactured product that is available on a consistent basis and a permanent solution to remove coal ash from the environment. In an effort to maximize recycled volumes, while maintaining consistent product quality, a successful harvesting and beneficiation program incorporates a number of steps that are customized to the specific material properties of available CCR’s. These steps include, but may not be limited to, drying, classifying, grinding and carbon treatment. This paper will discuss SEFA’s experience in harvesting and processing CCR for encapsulated beneficial use, as well as the common beneficiation techniques employed at commercial scale.
