Corrective Action Sustainability: Holistic Decision Support Tool Authors Mr. John Kondziolka - United States - Gradient Ms. Ari Lewis - United States - Gradient Mr. Bruce Hensel - United States - Electric Power Research Institute Mr. Andrew Bittner - United States - Gradient Abstract Selecting a corrective action approach to address groundwater protection standards at a coal combustion product (CCP) site requires balancing a variety of factors, including risk reduction, effectiveness, community impact, and cost. Several resources exist for conducting corrective action alternatives analyses, but these resources have not been used consistently to holistically evaluate risks and benefits inclusive of sustainability principles. Additionally, there is a lack of information describing how various corrective action technologies may facilitate the achievement of corporate sustainability goals. We developed a holistic decision support tool to assess the relative performance of corrective action alternatives using sustainability criteria. Relevant criteria for this tool were derived from principles consistent with triple-bottom-line economics; environmental, social, and governance (ESG) analysis; life-cycle analysis (LCA); net environmental benefit analysis (NEBA); and the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The holistic decision support tool was developed to be an interactive spreadsheet with both a 'lite' version that can be completed rapidly by knowledgeable site professionals and a 'full' version with additional criteria and more in-depth analyses. The results of an analysis with the tool are presented as a heat map that effectively visualizes the sustainability advantages and disadvantages of each alternative.
