Description

Considering the Big Picture: Planning and Designing for a Multiple CCR Landfill Site Authors Mr. Andrew Rodzianko - United States - AECOM Ms. Monica Moody - United States - AECOM Abstract The phasing and design challenges are numerous for any site looking to construct, operate, and close on-site CCR landfills while closing on-site impoundments. In some cases, it may be preferable to build multiple landfills, greatly increasing site-wide phasing, planning, and design elements to be considered. This presentation will review potential benefits and challenges such a site may face and discuss several specific planning and design elements for consideration. Specific examples taken from a site proposing multiple new CCR landfills to receive material from closure-by-excavation of large CCR impoundments will be used with discussion focused on key takeaways potentially applicable to other CCR sites. Some of the aspects to be discussed include: • Benefits and challenges of multiple onsite landfills, • Phasing/constructability challenges as a constant overarching consideration, • Consideration of existing conditions including CCR impoundments, groundwater, and infrastructure to be demolished, • Soil balance planning utilizing onsite sources considering limited storage areas, • Stormwater management: contact vs. non-contact water routing and discharge, • Maintaining and/or maximizing use of existing infrastructure including transmission lines, pipelines, treatment facilities, spillways, dams, and roads, • Site wide multi-landfill leachate management, • Integrating the contractor as a valuable resource in ongoing planning/design.
