Abstract

The preparation of excerpts from the orchestral canon is a standard part of musical pedagogy. For trombones, the “standard, first-round” excerpts come from a selection of orchestral masterworks, including works such as Mozart’s Requiem, Ravel’s Bolero, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, and Saint-Saëns’ Third Symphony. Such excerpts are often used for wind band auditions despite being rarely, if ever, performed in a wind band setting. Rather than only learning excerpts written for an orchestral setting, the author proposes that excerpts from music written for wind band be used as well.

Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive overview of wind band excerpts for trombone except for Paul Martin Hageman’s 1998 dissertation, Trombone Excerpts from the Concert Band Repertory, which provides no practical insight in preparing the excerpts selected. Originally envisioned as an evolution of Hageman’s writing, this project was intended to focus on works written solely for wind band. Instead, this scaled down document is being presented as a proof-of-concept with a focus on the works of a single composer, David R. Holsinger, with excerpts accompanied by commentary colored by a decade of experience playing his music. Research conducted while focused on the original, larger-scale project will be provided in Appendices below.

All excerpts have been reproduced directly from their respective scores using Finale notation software, with only slight formatting changes where necessary.
