Abstract

Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (OLLI) operate within higher education environments but lack consistent standards for managing their development function. Because OLLI depend increasingly on philanthropic support clear and effective stewardship practices are essential. This study reviews publicly available policies and communication materials from a sample of 15 OLLI programs to assess current practices in development planning and reporting, donor cultivation and recognition, gift solicitation and development focused communication. These policies and practices were evaluated and used to generate recommendations to improve the programs development function and align these practices with standards in the not for profit and higher education sectors.
