Abstract
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) launched its Digital Project Delivery (DPD) Initiative in September 2020 with the goal of expanding the use of digitally formatted plan and project information throughout the transportation asset life cycle, from project delivery through asset management. KYTC retained Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) staff with expertise in construction and design to facilitate DPD implementation. This document summarizes DPD-related efforts undertaken by the Cabinet over the past five years. Key activities completed during this period include a survey of Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors members to document their perspectives on design file usage and preferences, coordinating multiple projects on which DPD was piloted, building robust communication networks to keep internal and external stakeholders updated on the initiative’s rollout, collaborating with several transportation agencies (e.g., Federal Highway Administration, Caltrans), and establishing the Cabinet’s Committee for Model-Based Design and Construction. Lessons learned during Phase 1 of implementation are discussed as well as long-term strategies for streamlining DPD adoption agencywide.
