Adult Victims of Intimate Partner Violence: Mental Health Implications and Interventions
Abstract
The overwhelming size and negative impact of intimate partner violence are now well documented. The field has also exposed the multiple forms of abuse that women in these situations often experience. Mental health professionals are uniquely positioned through their close and confidential relationship with their clients to provide care that will promote a woman’s physical and mental health safety. This article reviews the prevalence of intimate partner violence in general and in clinical populations, describes the various forms of abuse, and focuses on critical components of clinical care in these cases.
