Description
Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) containing large amounts of nitrate was ensiled in the laboratory silo in 5 experiments. Variations in (1) Exp l; additives (CaCO3, glucose and urea), (2) Exp 2; heavy or light consolidation, (3) Exp 3; length of chop (10 or 50 mm), (4) Exp 4; moisture level of material (86.9, 77. land 51.5%) and (5)Exp5; ensilage temperature (15, 28 and 35°C), were investigated. In Exp I, the silages with CaCO3 + glucose and glucose alone added at ensiling were good quality and the rate of nitrate disappearance wns 40.7% and 22.6% respectively. In Exp 2, no differe nces in nitrate disappearance and quality of silages were observed between heavily and lightly packed treatments at high and medium moisture levels. The nitrate disappearance of these silages was high (80.1-9 1.5%). In Exp 3, there were no marked differences in nitrate disappearance and quality between silages chopped into 10 and 50 mm lengths, at high and low moisture levels. In Exp 4, at medium moisture silage quality was fairly good and the rate of nitrate disappearance was 98.0%. In Exp 5, nitrate disappearance of silages was more effected by' ensilage temperature in the silages of high moisture than in the silages of medium moisture. In high moisture silages, the rate of nitrate disappearance was 14.7% and 17.1% in silage at 15°C and 28°C respectively, and was 78,5% in silage at 35°C. These experiments demonstrate that nitrate disappearnnce of silages is markedly effected by additives and moisture level.
