Description

The medium altitude (1000 - 2000 m) acid soil regions of East Africa are preferred agricultural areas due to the adaption of coffee and many food crops to the environment. In the Soddo, Wolaita area of Ethiopia population densities are high and farm size averagess about l ha. There is a lack of high quality feed in the area for the cattle which are an integral part of the farming system. A trial was designed to test the productivity of promising legumes in mixture with a commercial cultivar of a grass dominant in the region for cut and carry feeding under low fertilizer inputs.
