Description
Until recently murex medic (Medicago murex) was not considered to be particularly useful as a pasture species anywhere in the world. However, the identification of several unique characteristics possessed by this species has stimulated interest in its use. The first registered variety, Zodiac, was developed by the Western Australian Department of Agriculture and released to seed producers throughout Australia in 1988. Other varieties are being evaluated and further releases are likely in a few years. The Western Australian Department of Agriculture now holds the world's largest collection of the murex species with approximately 450 introductions from the Mediterranean region.
