Description

The first commercial protein fractionation plant in New Zealand is located at Broadlands on a geothermal steam field in the central North Island pumice lands. Lucerne is harvested over a 30 km radius and trucked to the processing plant. This factory has a wet input design capacity of 10 tonnes per hour expansible to 20 tonnes per hour. Freshly harvested lucerne is pulped and double pressed to express the juice which is then coagulated with steam, centrifuged, and the leaf protein concentrate {LPC) dried and pelleted. The presscake is also dried and pelleted. The deproteinised juice {DPJ) is evaporated and the resulting molasses can be either sold or added back into the presscake.
