Description
Temperate pasture grass growth rates are lowest in winter and limit the number of stock that can be carried through the year on many farms. Field studies of the regulation of pasture growth in winter showed that the earlier a grass intiates reproductive development the greater is the mean pasture growth rate through winter. A 5 to 10 fold variation in winter growth rates between a range of genera and ecotypes was simply related to the time of onset of reproductive development. Prospects for improving winter pasture growth by selecting for early flowering outlined.
