Description

To clarify the characteristics of CO2 balance and solar energy utilization during the regrowth period of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) sward, canopy photosynthesis and dark respiration were periodically measured in the same sward used in the previous paper I. The measurement of canopy photosynthesis was done using the chamber method under field conditions. Dark respiration in population was calculated based on the dark respiratory rates in each organ and dry weight at each regrowth stage. Canopy photosynthesis correlated closely with solar radiation. The light response of gross photosynthetic rate (Pg) changed with LAI increase from a saturated curve to a non-saturated one. The highest value of Pg was 56 gDW/m2/day at the middle stage of regrowth period. The amount of dark respiration in population (R) was larger at the early stage and it decreased gradually till the later stage of regrowth period. The net production (Pn=Pg-R) showed almost similar pattern to that of Pg. The maximum Pn was 29.7 gDW/m2/day at the middle stage. Pn/Pg and R/Pg ratios differed with regrowth stage, and were 51-56% in the former and 44-49% in the latter during main regrowth period. Efficiency of solar energy utilization (Eu) also differed with each regrowth stage. Eu based on Pg and Pn were 3.94% and 1.87% in average values during the regrowth period, respectively.
