Description

The world collection of perennial grassland plants comprises 12,940 samples of 366 species, thereof 7,094 samples of leguminous plants, 5,286 samples of gramineous plants, and 560 samples of plants growing in arid regions. These samples are tested at experimental sta­tions of the Institute situated in the Noncherno­zem zone, in the northern Caucasus, in Ka­zakhstan, in the Volga area, in West and East Siberia, in the Far East as well as in the Uzbek and Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republics. The samples were grouped according to the fol­lowing characters: high yields of fresh matter, hay and seeds, resistance to disease, winte_r hardiness, crude protein . content, earliness, persistence, and other valuable biological prop­erties. Using the world collection of grassland plants, 69 regionized varieties have been bred in the USSR between 1966 and 1975, among them 13 clover, 11 alfalfa, 3 sainfoin, 1 common bird's.foottrefoil, 4 timothy, 10meadow fescue, 2 wheat grass, 3 perennial ryegrass, 2 couch grass, 8 cock's foot, 8 bromegrass, 1 meadow grass, 2 canary grass, and 1 bent grass varieties
