Stolons of Agropyron repens were sampled at different dates in a trial fertilized with 0, 60, 120, 240, 480, and 720 kg N/ha for many years. From the carbohydrate fractions determii,ed by means of gas chromatography, the fructosan content, the degree of polymerization, and the content of structural substances are discussed. After heavy nitrogen fertilization the carbohydrate requirements of the plants could not be met for some time. Nevertheless, the vitality of plants did not decrease. When controlling Agropyron repens by way of mechanical and crop husbandry techniques, it is necessary to take into consideration the quantity of stolons increasing with the spread of the species owing to higher nitrogen fertilization, i.e. the increasing quantity of buds and of high-energy substance which must be decomposed. No new clues for control can be deduced from the composition of that substance.
